SLS Professor Appointed to ABA Standing Committee on Professional Discipline

Professor Kellyn O. McGee has been appointed by the ABA to serve a three-year term on the Standing Committee on Professional Discipline. Her term will begin this year. Savannah Law School is sure that the ABA will make good use of her experience and talents. Professor McGee teaches Civil Procedure I & II and in future years will add Alternative Dispute Resolution and Professional Responsibility to her teaching assignments. Congratulations Professor McGee.

Friday May 31st, Landscape Painting Exhibition at Savannah Law School

The public is invited to attend a reception showcasing the Landscape Painting Exhibition at Savannah Law School. Twenty-three paintings by emerging artists are available for viewing and sale throughout the law school’s newly renovated wing of the historic Candler hospital complex on Forsyth Park. Renovations at Savannah Law School Make Local News

Originally the historic Warren Candler Hospital, Savannah Law School has been strategically working to renovate the 194-year-old building since the school opened in 2012. Savannah Morning News recently published an article to update residents on the school’s progress. Working primarily on interior renovations thus far, the school moved into the next phase of the renovation process Friday as construction crews demolished the facade of the building. Once the construction is complete, Dean Richardson Lynn believes Savannah Law School will be “the prettiest law school in America.” For the full article, click here.

SLS Student Receives the Judge Kravitch Scholarship

Savannah Law School student, Jaime Withers, is this year’s recipient of the Judge Kravitch Scholarship. The Judge Phyllis Kravitch Scholarship is established by the Savannah Bar Association in tribute to this outstanding community leader known for her character, integrity and compassion. The fairness, patience and wisdom of Judge Kravitch serve as an inspiration not only to all lawyers and judges but to the community at large. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist a rising second or third year law school student from Chatham County in continuing his/her education at a school of law. The scholarship award of $1,000 is given to one student based on merit for their second or third year of study in law school. This past semester, Ms. Withers served as president of the Student Bar Association and is a member of Savannah Law School’s newly formed Law Review and competition Trial Team. Congratulations to Jaime, an honor well-deserved.

Savannah Law School Announces Six New Faculty Hires

Savannah Law School welcomes six new faculty hires. Five professors will begin in the 2013-2014 academic year and one professor will begin this summer. The new faculty are as follows:

Associate Professor Andrew McCanse Wright: Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Presidential Powers, National Security Law.
Assistant Professor Joseph D’Agostino: Torts, Evidence, Administrative Law.
Associate Professor Maggie O. Tsavaris: Legal Writing, Research, and Analysis.
Associate Professor Judd Sneirson: Business Organizations, Intellectual Property, Contracts, Green Business Seminars.
Associate Professor Stephen Camp: Torts, Constitutional Law.
Associate Professor Luke Boso: Civil Procedure I & II and Property I & II.

SLS Professor Comments on Boston Bombing Suspect and President Obama in Savannah Morning News Article

Andrew Wright, incoming professor at Savannah Law School, recently published an article in Savannah Morning News regarding President Obama’s comments on the Boston bombing suspect last Monday. As the former Associate Counsel to the President, Professor Wright lends his expertise – “This newspaper’s editorial board lambasted President Obama for not designating the Boston Marathon bombing suspect an ‘enemy combatant.’ There are fundamental problems of policy and law with the editorial. The president got it right.”

Therapy Dogs Visit SLS to Relieve the Stress of Final Exams

Finals are always stressful times, especially for law students. Knowing this, the newly formed Savannah Law School Student Bar Association (SBA) came up with a solution: therapy dogs. The SBA has partnered with Therapy Dogs International (TDI), a volunteer organization dedicated to regulating, testing, and registrating of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers nationwide for the purpose of visiting nursing homes, hospitals, other institutions, and wherever else therapy dogs are needed, to bring stress relief to our campus.

On May 1st, volunteers from the Savannah Chapter of TDI will be visiting our campus at two different times to offer stress relief sessions with their therapy dogs. Both day and evening students will be able to participate and benefit from the event.

The first therapy dog/law student session will be immediately following the day-time Torts final on May 1, from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. The second session will be immediately preceding the night-time Torts final on May 1, from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. SBA hopes all students will be able to gather so that the dogs and handlers can help ease some of the stress surrounding finals.

SLS Student Wins Regional Edward R. Murrow Award

Savannah Law School is proud to announce that SLS student Mary Hashemi recently won the Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast. The winning newscast was the 6 p.m. newscast from the Presidential visit to Fort Stewart last year that she wrote and produced. Since 1971, the Radio and Television News Directors Association honors outstanding achievements in broadcast journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Award. Murrow’s pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the award that carry his name. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession. On behalf of Savannah Law School, congratulations Mary!
