Policies

The purpose of these policies are to help ensure that students, faculty, staff, and other members of the SLS community have maximum access to computers and network services and are aware of the rights and responsibilities associated with technology usage.

Acceptable Use Policy

SLS will provide computer and network resources for the use of students, faculty and staff. These resources are for use by the SLS community in a manner consistent with the mission of the law school. These resources are limited. How each individual uses them impacts the work of other members of the community and beyond. We need to be aware of our obligations to others and of what constitutes proper use and behavior. All eligible users of technology at SLS are expected to follow the guidelines for acceptable use of technology as outlined.

Network Access & User Accounts Policy

Access to the computing network and Internet is limited to members of the SLS community and select outside entities (select special guests and vendors). The privilege of using the campus and network computing resources is not transferable to others, e.g., sharing passwords or giving someone else access to your account. You are responsible for any misuse of your account by others. Make sure you set a password that will protect your account from unauthorized use and will not be guessed easily.

Primary accounts issued by SLS include the following:
NetID – Windows domain account that grants access to campus wireless network and other web resources (career services job search, student surveys, etc.)

Google Apps – Campus email services

CampusAnyware – Online Registration & Student Information Services.

The following accounts will be issued to the SLS community for educational purposes by 3rd party vendors, however, the IT department does not directly support these accounts.  Support is provided by the respective representative:

Lexis or Westlaw/TWEN – Incoming 1L students will receive account information in a legal research class.  Transfer students will need to speak with the Assistant Director of the Law Library for new accounts or to transfer an account from a former institution.

Faculty, staff, students, and guests who own a laptop or other portable devices have the option to use their computer or device to access the SLS network(s). In order to ensure the reliability of the network and related services, and to provide for the security of all individuals who use the SLS network(s), the following guidelines have been established:

Internet Access Requirements for Wireless Users

  • Users must have a network enabled computer. The school will not supply any networking hardware or cables.
  • Users wishing to access the Internet via the SLS network, must have an active and updated subscription to an antivirus application. Computers with outdated virus definitions and/or expired antivirus licenses will be denied network access. Any user failing to maintain an up-to-date antivirus subscription will have their Internet access privileges terminated.
  • Users are required to keep their computers and/or devices up-to-date with all relevant security updates and program fixes. Most of these updates can be installed automatically.
  • Internet access may be interrupted or suspended at any time for security and maintenance purposes.

Prohibited Activities

  • Sending intimidating or harassing messages, i.e. personal attacks, threats, discriminatory, abusive language, or repeated unsolicited mail.
  • Copying software and other copyrighted materials; accessing any other computer system or network without authorization.
  • Uses which are illegal or in violation of SLS’s code of conduct.
  • Preventing someone from using his/her account by unauthorized access of the account and changing the password.
  • Engaging in commercial activities, e.g., advertising or selling commercial products.
  • Installation of unauthorized or personal software and hardware on SLS owned equipment
  • Using another person’s password.
  • Deleting or copying files from another person’s computer account.
  • Performing activities that interfere with the rights of others.

Failure to Comply

SLS will suspend or revoke the computing privileges of anyone who violates this Acceptable Use Policy. If the terms of this agreement are violated, SLS may take disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment, academic probation or expulsion, depending upon the nature of the violation.

Access to User Material

SLS respects individuals’ rights to privacy and takes steps to prevent unauthorized access to materials stored on, or transmitted via, SLS computing or network equipment. Savannah Law School reserves the right to examine such electronic materials at its sole discretion in certain cases. When the law school believes that there is a potential violation of a law, or of a law school policy, or if there is reasonable suspicion of misuse, IT personnel  may access these electronic materials for investigative purposes. The law school will remove materials not in compliance with the Acceptable Use Policy.
